Health & Cycling 101
Here are some super basic tips to staying healthy before and while you ride your bicycle. One might even say it should be something done on a regular basis regardless of whether you ride a bike, but that's none of my business.
The Three Keys
1. Water
Water is the essence of life and also the universal solvent! Always remember to stay well hydrated by drinking before, during and after your intensive bike riding sessions.
Bring sufficient water depending on how long your trip is. Try to overestimate, since water is one of the most important things you can bring with you. Agua de vida, baby!
Remember: by the time you feel thirsty, it's too late!
2. Food
Ah, the food chain/pyramid/wheel/cylinder/smorgasbord! There are articles and articles about this stuff.
For cycling, just try to top up with carbohydrates and some fats before the ride to fuel your body. That's the reason a lot of athletes do this magical wonderful thing called "carboloading" a few days or the night before a big sports event. They really shovel down all that rice and pasta and tasty stuff they would normally only nibble at.
On the morning or before your ride, take something light and simple, unless you've got a good couple of hours before you set out. Have some sugary stuff, like fruits right before and while you cycle to keep you going.
When you're done, get some good protein in there to let you body rebuild and recuperate.
Oh, and fibre. Lots of fibre.
3. Stretching
Nothing like a good stretch before you hop on your bike, right? No need to go all yoga on your back.
Because you'll tend to be arching your neck, back and arms, which will remain in a relatively staionary position during your ride, you should definitely give those areas a good workout before you start cycling. If you find you suffer from a stiff neck or pain in that region, then this article expounds on the topic in more detail.
Remember to give your bike a quick stretch as well!
