Great news for runners in Penang! The running track at City Stadium in Lorong Kulit is now officially open to the public, and it’s completely free to use.
This month marks the one year anniversary of when the City Stadium was first opened to the public in May 2025.
The track is accessible on specific days of the week from 5:00pm to 7:30pm, except during special events or functions. This initiative was introduced by Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who worked closely with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to make it a reality.

Speaking at the launch, Wong described the opening as a meaningful milestone for the local running community.
“Today marks a significant moment as we open the City Stadium running track to the public at no cost,” he said. “As a runner and chairman of the Penang Bridge International Marathon, I’ve seen firsthand how limited proper training venues are on the island.”
He added that the availability of a dedicated running surface will benefit not only athletes, but also fitness enthusiasts and families looking for a safe and comfortable place to walk or jog in the evenings.
Wong also highlighted that the track is constructed using high-quality materials, providing a safe and performance-friendly surface for those aiming to improve their fitness or athletic performance.

The opening ceremony was attended by MBPP Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran, along with councillors Benji Ang Ming Quan, Visvenathan Tangavello, Koay Gaik Kee, and Penang Youth and Sports Department (JSBNPP) director Mozakir Buyong Mokhtar.
Rajendran clarified that, for now, only the running track is open to the public. The stadium’s grass field will remain closed to preserve its condition for football matches.
To access the track, visitors are required to register by scanning a QR code available at the stadium entrance.
He also outlined several important guidelines for users:
- Business activities and private coaching sessions are not permitted
- Only plain water is allowed; isotonic and carbonated drinks are prohibited
- Users are responsible for their own safety and personal belongings
- Visitors should maintain cleanliness and avoid causing disturbances within the stadium
This new initiative offers a welcome boost to Penang’s active lifestyle scene, providing a dedicated and accessible space for the community to stay fit and healthy.
