Penang 27th August 2022 - George Town was awash with esport fever this past weekend with multiple gaming tournaments happening all at once in the heart of Penang.

The LovePenang Esport Championship blasted off on the 8th floor of 1st Avenue Penang with MLBB and Tekken 7 tournaments simultaneously, while the launch of the Penang Esports Academy saw furious mobile battles of PUBG over at Komtar. 

 

 

 

To kick off the event, Storm Karate Club members gave an amazing karate performance led by Yap Sensei.

 

 

Chief Minister Y.A.B. Tuan Chow Kon Yeow officiated the opening of Lovepenang Esport Championship 2022, also participated by Youth and Sports Exco, Soon Lip Chee; The Director of the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP), Harry Chai Heng Hua and the General Manager of the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), Dr. Gwee Sai Ling.

 

"Let us together create a Penang that continues to thrive in inclusive digital transformation to achieve a competitive and progressive digital economy, as well as a centre for the development of the esports industry in the country," said the Chief Minister at the opening ceremony.

 

 

The chief minister was brought on a tour of the booths and then proceeded to battle YB Soon Lip Chee in a Tekken 7 match on the big screen.

 

The Champion of Tekken 7; Mohammad Zaris Aiman Aris a.k.a ZABA

 

The Tekken 7 tournament saw a full house, with 64 players participating in the Championship. Mohammad Zaris Aiman Aris a.k.a “ZABA”; The SEA Games Tekken 7 athlete won the championship worth RM500. Abdul Rahim a.k.a. “Fate”, also a SEA Games Tekken 7 athlete, won second place by winning RM300 and the third place was won by Haziq Karim a.k.a “The Jacket”.

 

The Champion Mobile Legends : Bang Bang; The Bountee Esport Team

 

24 teams and more than 150 youths from all over Malaysia participated in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang championship. The Bountee Esport team from Sarawak took home the grand prize worth RM4000. Second place was won by Landscape Esport by winning RM2000 while GVS x beONE INFINITY won third place and brought home RM1000.

 

 

Cosplayers were also invited to this event to liven up the atmosphere, Chiemi Snow as Anna William (Tekken 7), Sam Jaywalker as Guinevere (Mobile Legend), Zin88g as Asuka Hazama (Tekken 7), and Jeremy Ng as Captain America (Marvel).

 

 

Lucky Draw prized included a Limit mountain bike, a more petite folding bike, a bright new Nintendo Switch, long board and other accessories.

 

 

There were also several booths from Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), Lovepenang, Digi, Hobby Shop, Tech Dome and many more.

 

 

Penang E-Sports Academy, the first development of e-sports in the state, was established on the same day located on Level 3 in Komtar. The academy is equipped with 12 units of high-end gaming PC, two units of PlayStation 5 console, furniture and other facilities for the youth.

 

 

The esports industry in Malaysia has seen tremendous growth over the years, both in terms of viewership and revenue.
