AIR ITAM – In conjunction with the 67th National Day celebration this year, the Bukit Bendera Parliamentary constituency is organising the 'Merdeka Hike 2024' for the first time as a way to foster a spirit of love for the country.
Bukit Bendera Member of Parliament, Syerleena Abdul Rashid, said that the program is a platform to cultivate patriotism, which is currently seen as diminishing among the community.
"This event is also a collaboration with Coway Co. and will be organised for the first time as a new avenue to promote hiking sports.
"Besides nurturing a sense of love for the country, this program is timely as the state has many hiking trails, especially in the Bukit Bendera Parliamentary area.
"And we are also aware that Penang is indeed famous as a tourism hub; indirectly, such programs can boost the state’s economy and help foster a healthy community,” she said during a press conference here earlier.
Also present were Penang City Council (MBPP) Councillor R. Vickneson; Chairman of the Bukit Bendera Village Community Management Council (MPKK), R. Nelamurthi; and representatives from the sponsors.
Elaborating further, Syerleena also hopes that the program will receive a good response and participation from all layers of society.
"Participants can now register by scanning the QR code provided by the sponsors, with participation limited to the first 300 registrants and closing once full.
"Additionally, children are also welcome to join the 6-kilometre hike, with full supervision from parents; hiking crew will also be stationed at each ‘checkpoint’ to offer any assistance if needed.
"For your information, participants should gather as early as 7:30 a.m. at the MPKK Bukit Bendera Hall before starting the hike to the Hye Keat Meeting Point while waving the Jalur Gemilang,” she added, noting that T-shirts and hiking gear will also be provided.
