Did You Know Malaysia’s Highest Elevated Highway Is In Penang?

A brand new section of the Bukit Kukus Paired Road Project that connects Paya Terubong to Relau opened to traffic on 13th January 2022. This new causeway in Penang Island now officially stands as Malaysia’s highest elevated highway.

On 4th January 2022, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the road project under the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is now 100% completed after 6 years of construction.

This 5.5 kilometres paired road project at Bukit Kukus links Paya Terubong and Relau. At the height of 59m from pile caps, it has become the highest elevated highway in Malaysia after Rawang Bypass. The project is divided into 3 sections where each is handled by MBPP (3.3km), PLB Land Sdn Bhd (1.4km), and Geo Valley Sdn Bhd (0.8km).

According to Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, the lengthy construction period was due to the landslide incident, the Covid-19 lockdown and some technical issues involving additional work. Nevertheless, the public can finally use this route to easily access all parts of the Penang Island.

“We hope this iconic project will be able to solve traffic congestion at a rate of up to 30%,” Zairil told. “This project is the state government’s legacy for the people of Penang. Hopefully, it will bring many benefits to the road users, especially residents of Balik Pulau, Paya Terubong and nearby areas.”
